Girls' Dress Code - Policy Clarification

Fri 4 Sep 2009

In an effort to alleviate parent and student confusion over the girls' dress code, we wish to clarify ambiguous language in the August 1st release of the General Handbook.  The President of the Student Government Association and Headmaster proposed, and the President of the Board of Directors approved, the following clarification.

The following is policy clarification for the sentence:

“T-shirts, undershirts and tank tops are not permitted as outer garments.”

A “T-shirt” (unacceptable apparel) is defined as a lightweight, short sleeve, jersey knit, buttonless, collarless, non-tapered pullover shirt without side seams.

T-shirt style shirts with side seams are not permitted if they contain screen printing, embroidery, or appliqués that occupy half or more of the shirt front or rear area.

T-shirt style shirts with side seams are not permitted if constructed of a material so shear that an undershirt is required to conceal undergarments.

Boy’s, men’s or unisex collarless shirts are also unacceptable.

The following is policy clarification for the sentence:

“Blouses and tops designed to be worn not-tucked-in are permitted; other shirts shall be tucked in.”

Certain blouses and tops may be worn tucked or not-tucked.  These generally include sweatshirts, certain overshirts, and shirts with straight, notched, flared, or gently contoured bottom hems.

The following shirts shall be worn tucked:

A shirt with a tennis tail, deeply contoured tail or diagonal tail.

A T-style, oxford style, or polo style shirt with a bottom hem that falls below the middle of the pants pockets or middle of the front zipper.

A shirt worn underneath an untucked top shirt.

     A boy’s, men’s, or unisex collared shirt.
