Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassinated.

Helen Sharman is the first Briton in space.

Linus Torvalds announces in a newsgroup that he is working on developing his own operating system (later to become Linux).

Apple releases the first version of QuickTime.

US airline Pan Am ends operations.
