Major Events of 1970

Biafra surrenders, ending the Nigerian civil war.

Pro-US coup in Cambodia. Lon Nol becomes leader.

United States invades Cambodia to attack Communist base areas.

Ohio National Guard opens fire on protesting students at Kent State University.  Four students are killed, nine are wounded.

The Beatles disband.  John Lennon and Yoko Ono marry.

Venera 7 (USSR) is first probe to return data from the surface of another planet (Venus).

China launches her first satellite, Dong Fang Hong I.

Brazil wins soccer World Cup.

Fiji becomes independent from UK.

Anwar Sadat becomes President of Egypt.
